Highland loch

This is quite a large drawing of a highland loch I am still enjoying the simplicity of drawing without the concerns of color. This is one of my favourite locations up on the west coast a quiet loch I arrived late in the afternoon and did a rough drawing which I later completed in my studio. There are some trees on the land area near to the shore and I think these do make a big difference to the mountain location. Drawn on cartridge paper using soft grades of graphite pencils. Happy drawing to you all!

This is lovely, Caroline. Fantastic atmosphere, and I agree that the lack of colour adds something special.

Hello Vandy great to see you here visiting my blog! thank you so much for your comment, often drawing at times for me is more relaxing than having to think about color but on other times I love to work with color!

I think that many times working with graphite can be even more expressive than working with color, and more challenging too, because it forces one to use value contrast to create the depth and mood of the scene, rather than relying on color. I love this drawing you've done! It really conveys a mood and a sense of time and place.

Many thanks Katherine, I love the simplicity of working with graphite being able to simply focus on tonal values and mood alone. It is more restful than working with color!
